Review :Deacon Blue At Portsmouth
Guildhall
The News 26th November 2018
On a wet Saturday night Deacon Blue arrived at the
Portsmouth Guildhall as part of their To Be Here Someday tour, a celebration of
a 30 year career. The last five years have seen something of a renaissance for
the band – three albums including 2016`s studio release The Believers proved to
be the catalyst to fuel a return showcasing some of their greatest hits.
They opened with I Was Right And You Were Wrong and Only Tender Love, the early
intimate start to the evening soon changed as they launched into crowd favourite
Loaded which had the audience on their feet. Deacon Blue’s powerful stage
presence and swirling music filled the auditorium. Frontman Ricky Ross talked of
his gratitude towards their loyal fan base and it was nice to see him happily
interact with the audience at every opportunity. The crowd sang along loudly to
every song, creating a moving and memorable evening. Hits like Chocolate Girl,
Real Gone Kid, Wages Day and Your Swaying Arms were followed by newer songs like
Hipsters and The Believers. After a short break they returned with a classic
rendition of Dignity before winding the night up with Fergus Sings The Blues.
Ross decided that one more song was needed, an acoustic version of Elvis`s
Always On My Mind.
